There is going to be a 2008 Woodburning Celebration Show and Competition this summer! Participation in this event is open to all Pyrographic Artists and people wanting to learn this art.

Wisconsin Pyro Workshop!

EXCITING NEWS!!! The Coulee Region WoodCarvers is sponsoring a Workshop to be held in La Crosse Wisconsin on Sat. November 3 from 9 to 4. Sharon Bechtold will be our teacher. She will be teaching a wild life project. Perhaps a hawk or a wolf. The price for the workshop is $47.00. To my knowledge, this will include all materials!!! VERY reasonable! If this is to take place, we must have a down payment of $25.00 by 9/29/07 by a minimum of 10 participants. Gathering of Wood Carvers in Somonauk IL (Pyrographers Too!)

What is a GOW? A Gathering of Woodcarvers where there are over 35 seminars for all levels of carving. Where is it going to be? At The Carving Shop in Somonauk, IL (address on the Directions page on the website below), with classes under a Big Top tent (except pyrography which will be indoors). When is it going to be? Campers come in on Monday, September 17, classes begin on the 18th, and go through Friday, the 21st. Campers usally start leaving on Saturday the 22rd. When�s it going to start? We�ll begin about 6 PM on Monday with a Social (Margarita Seminar), where there will be snacks and drinks, while the instructors introduce themselves and give information about their seminars. Tell us more about the Seminars. There will be about 15 instructors teaching about 35 seminars on woodcarving. Many of these seminars are directed toward the beginner carver. They will include carving birds, decoys, relief, in-the-round, busts, bark carving, pyrography, caricature carving, sharpening and much more. The seminars run from 9am to 5pm with an hour off for lunch; Tuesday through Friday. Some seminars are half-day ($5 plus material), some full day ($10 plus material) and some are more than one day. Burning The Human Eye

Begin by tracing or sketching an eye. (fig. 1)

I have the Razertip wood burning system and set the heat to �2� (between 1-10) My preference is to get a light burn going so that I can erase the sketch or graphite lines!

I start with the eye outline and the crease of the upper lid. (fig.2)

Still on �2� heat setting I begin to outline/shade the iris. Erasing lines as I go. After going all the way around the eye and filling in the pupil . I again ERASE any lines that may still be in the way of seeing how the eye is turning out.

NOTICE � I do NOT fill in the eye color completely. If you look closely at anyone�s eye � you will see that it is not solid � but filled with squiggly lines and differing depths of color. (fig.3)

This particular eye was �borrowed� from a professional photograph where careful lighting was established and 2 highlights are visible. On the eye YOU burn � the highlight may be more on the side of the iris or only one dab or arc at the lower part of the iris or pupil. Study your eye to see where it is and burn accordingly.

I like burning the eyelashes last � and have to be careful to not erase their lines. Sometimes I will lightly burn them if they interfere with the shading of the crease.

Time to fill in with details and darker burning. (fig.4)

I�m going to adjust the heat up to 3 now! All pens/machines burn differently � you may need to adjust yours higher (or lower) to get the same affects. I begin with the crease and then move to the lash edges. (fig.5)

I lower the heat again and do the light inside line of the lower lash and start to define the corners of the eye. (fig.6)

With the pen still at a low setting I shade and give depth to the creases � lash edges and corners of eye. I also start giving some shadows to the eyebrow. (fig.7)

Fig. 8 Shows the eyebrow hairs.

(Fig. 9) Is the completed eye. I did more finishing touches to the iris�. Making sure to leave lighter areas. Sometimes I use my �dot,dot,dot� pen tip to make the uneven shading. I also added light shading to the inside �whites of the eyes�. You can go on and on with as many details as you like � such as adding more definition to each eye lash� making wrinkles or a puffy area under the bottom lashes.

I give hugs and credit to MY personal trainer on eyes� NL Edwards who spent many hours trying to drill into my little brain what an EYE really looks like!

2006 Green Thumb Festival

I set up again at the annual Green Thumb Festival here in St. Petersburg. The weather cooperated and the turn out was great, especially on Saturday. I sold a total of 9 burnings, 3 drawings, and 16 magnets (made items from mirrored plastic, trying some new ideas), and was commissioned to do another burn. All in all an above average show for me, going to add more to offer with some different types of art & crafts for the next time. Thanx for reading! Joe.

Oil Pencil Application

Posted: 2006-02-26 02:00 I personally use the oil pencils by walnut hollow....any oil based colour works well for my technique. I use them like a watercolour pencil...but rather than blending them with water...I blend them with turp or varsol. Michaels is a great place to shop for you to get supplies on this...the pencils are there...go to the art supply section(where the graphite pencils and charcoal pencils are) and get some blending stomps or tortillions....they hold together better than q tips I think.
