I am knew to this and have wire tips but they don't seem to be working very well now, after researching on the internet they seem to suggest they have a finite lifespan.
I have cleaned and filed the tips but they only seem to last a few minutes then stop working
I have only had them less than a week.
I have ordered some wire to make my own, but is there any way of telling when they are no good

Paul, I only joined the group yesterday and noticed your post tonight. No tool or tip I know of lasts a lifetime. I have used Razertip tools my entire career with pyrography. If a tip bends beyond repair or breaks, the company will take it back and replace it for $5. That is a bargain. If a tip doesn't work properly,it is probably not because it is a not clean, especially if you have not had them even a week. Hope this helps. Julie
